Today, a group of my grade 10s were completing their Reviving the Romantics poetry presentations wherein they were supposed to find a contemporary song and prove that it was reminiscent of the Romantic Era based on 5 criteria.
The first student chose to analyze "Round Here" by the Counting Crows.
"Interesting selection, Chloe. When I was in ninth grade, I chose this same song for a lyric analysis assignment!"
The second student chose, "Truly Madly Deeply" by Savage Garden.
"You guys are really taking me back, here. Another 90s tune? That was the 90s, right?"
"I think so, Ms. Sleeves. I'm pretty sure it was from the year I was born."
The third student analyzed "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" by Elton John.
"Seriously? I remember slow dancing to this in seventh grade. What's up with the retro picks, guys?"
Silence.
"Is this stuff you're actually listening to? How did you find these songs?"
"Our parents helped us find them."
Ouch. Age fail.

I had a student refer to "Closing Time" by Semisonic as an 'oldie'. Failed his presentation, needless to say. Tragic.
